The Enigma Of Arrival*

A dear friend of MC's is leaving for Rome shortly. He's probably too young to know much about Joni Mitchell. He'd do well to make her acquaintance. The lyrics below speak for themselves, although LL should listen to the song in its entirety.

Maybe I’ll go to Amsterdam

Or maybe I’ll go to Rome
And rent me a grand piano and put some flowers ’round my room

But let’s not talk about fare-thee-wells now
The night is a starry dome.
And they’re playin’ that scratchy rock and roll
Beneath the mantle of the moon.

If your friend runs into Joni, he should tell her that there is a sensible response to her plaintive Big Yellow Taxi crap.

Joni whimpered, "Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got till its gone? They pave paradise and put up a parking lot."

Well Joni, if you want gas for that Big Yellow Taxi, there is a paradise you think about. It is a wasteland tundra with caribou dying for the shelter of pumping stations and pipelines. Drill, baby, drill.

Alan Partridge: "That was Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell, a song in which Joni complains they 'Paved paradise to put up a parking lot', a measure which actually would have alleviated traffic congestion on the outskirts of paradise, something which Joni singularly fails to point out, perhaps because it doesn't quite fit in with her blinkered view of the world. Nevertheless, nice song."
