Margaret Thatcher 30 Years Ago Today

Thirty years ago today Maggie Thatcher took up residence at 10 Downing Street. It is difficult to overstate her importance. The always superb John O'Sullivan makes the case that she halted Great Britain's decline. Click on the title of this post to read him.

You do realize Ballard also admired Thatcher, don't you?

J.G. Ballard, from 'What I Believe':

I believe in the mysterious beauty of Margaret Thatcher, in the arch of her nostrils and the sheen on her lower lip; in the melancholy of wounded Argentine conscripts; in the haunted smiles of filling station personnel; in my dream of Margaret Thatcher caressed by that young Argentine soldier in a forgotten motel watched by a tubercular filling station attendant.

Just when I thought there might be depth and substance to JG, this poster sets matters right. He's just another fool when it comes to politics to say nothing of literature. I mean it's SF damn it, not sci fi. Phew.

I did read Martin Amis's recollection of him. A very high functioning alcoholic was JG. For a Brit, that's the highest compliment.

Are you the poster who suggested The Drowned World? Out of print. You'd think the Borg who visited this site would have kept in print. But that would require money and a job.
